Passion projects are an important way to nurture my continued growth and creative fulfillment.

My most recent passion project is a series based on the sci-fi classic novel Dune, heavily featuring type and vector illustration styles that are a departure from my traditional work. Dune is iconic for sweeping alien landscapes of endless desert, the perfect backdrop for its characteristic balance of tragedy, philosophy, and political intrigue. It’s also evocative of the classic 60’s and 70’s-era age of high science fiction, distinguished by its epic world-building and distinctive Islamic influence. I brought these unique qualities to life with bold, contrasting colors and chunky retro type (chosen to evoke an early-edition cover from my first copy of the novel).

One of my primary influences when working with type-forward projects is the Swiss International movement. As an early student of Armin Hoffman’s work, I learned to value simplicity in form and color as a way to evoke powerful visuals (see cover, below).

Currently, I’m exploring how Arabic architectural shapes could bring a subtle influence to the designs (see poster, below). I look forward to continuing to build out this project as I find new ways to express my passion for the world of Dune!
